How to let go of control and fear?

The process of letting go, letting go of fear, of control, of emotions that does not serve us, may seem challenging at time… because we are wired to survive. We learned to do what we can to control our environment to survive. We even create a personality so that we have a sense of control of how to receive love…

Truly not much is in our control: the earth is spinning around itself and the sun, the universe is expanding, nature is doing what nature does, the rain is falling when clouds are gathering, our body is doing its thing without us being conscious about it, and as we see today unpredictable (to us) events occur that change our lives…

Letting go is surrendering to accepting reality as it is, to release that control and to accept the uncertainty of what is going to be. …. In true surrendering, there is a big leap of trust and faith in the universe (or whatever you would like to call it, God, Universal Consciousness). Today more than any other time (At least in my generation and younger generations) we have to surrender, we have no control over the situation, we have to relax and accept, find peace…

Like a lot of us humans, I have had waves of fear and anxiety in this peculiar year. I was supposed to travel to Nepal for a volunteering trip, which was cancelled, so I went on a yoga retreat while we could still leave our house. The training was amazing, I came back energized and peaceful, however I came back in the midst of the fear, an energy that was palpable… a time where people were buying enough toilet paper to build a TP castle in their backyard.

And fear crept in my mind, my body, my face…. For a few days… then I gave myself permission to feel the fear, the darkness, the pain. Fear of the uncertainty. Fear for my kids, my family, my dad… feel the pain of those who died, their family, those who lost their jobs….I let myself go there, I sat still… and had a good sob about it, and got to release the pain. After that the surrender came, where a big sense of peace came, a big sense of joy for the earth getting a break from us, our pollution, our busy-ness, our non-present-ness, a big sense of peace, a true sense of knowing that everything will be OK.

Letting go means accepting the darkness AND seeing the light, accepting the uncertainty of life, surrendering to what is without resistance. And this acceptance of “what is” is very different from a state of resignation, in which there is a sense of hopelessness, that nothing can be done to change things. In a state of true surrender and acceptance, we have the ability to see things differently and change is possible, but from a higher state of mind, not a state of fear.

Here is a meditation to support you in the process of letting go:
